Ubisoft’s Canceled Prince of Persia Leaked Footage Will Make You Question What They Were Doing

It’s quite common to see big studios cancel a project, no matter how advanced, to avoid further losses regarding the investment. Recently, a video leaked showing a cancelled Prince of Persia game that Ubisoft was developing about eight years ago. 

This game was unique in that it completely redesigned the classic mechanics found in the franchise, transforming them into something more akin to Soulslike games. The reactions on social media sites such as X are quite mixed, and fans are unsure if this project has been a success or a failure for the studio.

Ubisoft Had a Fairly Advanced Project for a New Prince of Persia Several Years Ago

Many studios make the toughest decisions regarding game projects that could potentially have worked. Even if a studio perceives a game as a potential loss, they will cancel it without hesitation, regardless of its level of development and advancement.

This happened recently with a leaked Prince of Persia game that was supposed to be released about eight years ago; Ubisoft simply canceled the project.

Fans quickly responded to the leaked videos on social media platforms such as X. Most had mixed feelings about this game due to its unusual design compared to other games in the franchise.

The first thing users noticed was that this game combined many aspects of Soulslike games. Likewise, the video also shows the platforming details that always stood out in these games, but there were quite a few changes in the general mechanics.

A Title That Was Canceled Might Have Gone Unnoticed

Many fans started to share their opinions about this cancelled game, called Prince of Persia: Redemption. It seems that the mix of these two genres was not what they expected, and the fact that enemies had health bars did not excite them much either.

The leaked video clearly revealed that the title was still in its alpha stage, making it difficult to assess its graphical quality while maintaining a solid appearance.

According to some user opinions, the cancellation of this game was likely a wise choice, given its potential to fall short of sales expectations upon release.

Despite being close to completion, the studio never disclosed this project until this leak, and it did not provide any explanation for its cancellation. In this case, the studio probably made the right choice; this kind of game would have worked at the time.

Ubisoft has confirmed that it is diligently working on a comprehensive remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, currently slated for a much later release.

It appears that the studio is reaffirming its faith in the franchise, as evidenced by the two games they released this year, each featuring a completely different profile from their previous use of the character. Fans received these games very well.
