Walled Lake man arrested after allegedly shooting his neighbor, barricading himself

WALLED LAKE, Mich. (FOX 2) – A barricaded shooting suspect surrendered to police after a barricaded standoff inside his Walled Lake home for hours early on Friday.

Police on loudspeaker: “Donovan – we do not want anyone to get hurt – come to the door with your hands up. We want this to end safely for you and your family – come to the door.”

Police and SWAT responded to a condominium complex on Dover Hill just after 4 a.m. after neighbors reported hearing shots. A victim who was shot in the leg was taken to a hospital and was released.

Police said that the suspect and victim were arguing before the suspect pulled out a gun and started shooting inside the victim’s garage. After, the suspect barricaded himself inside his home.

Eventually the suspect, his girlfriend and their toddler would leave the home – the adults – in handcuffs.

Brian Markowski is the neighbor who was shot – the bullet going through his leg.

“He’ll be going to prison where people like that belong,” he said. “I’m glad I’m here because that gun was at my face for way too long.”

Neighbors say it all started around 2 a.m. when the suspect and his girlfriend were fighting – police came – then left – and then a couple hours later, Markowski says the man kicked his girlfriend out of the house.

“He threw his girlfriend out in the middle of the night and she was sitting in the car and I could hear her whimpering, and she sounded so upset and so distraught,” Markowski said.

“(I’m) asking – what’s going on – he says – ‘I’m throwing her out.’

Markowski says he asked his neighbor to wait until it was light out – asked him to lower his voice.

“Next thing I know he goes in the house – comes back, he’s brandishing a weapon,” he said. “I said well – this is going to end really bad for you or really bad for me – in my mind that’s what I’m thinking.”

Markowski says the neighbor backed him into his own garage – that’s when bullets flew. Markowski punched him in the face – then the shooter barricaded himself and his family inside their home – before surrendering.

“You know – I’m lucky to be here,” he said.

It’s not clear just what charges this young man will be facing but it’s not likely he’ll be returning here – anytime soon.
