We Have to Admit, Helldivers 2 Recreated in Clone Wars Style Looks Thrilling

An animated video of Helldivers 2 gameplay has been circulating on the internet, and fans wonder when Arrowhead Game Studios released such a version of the game. However, it turns out that the video was an imaginative idea of an animator fan who modeled it after Genndy Tartakovsky’s Star Wars: Clone Wars. The video had fans almost convinced for a second that the new video game got itself an animated remake.

Helldivers 2, a sequel to the 2015 game, was released for PlayStation 5 and Windows on February 8, 2024. The game was an immediate success, selling over a million copies in the first three days of its release. Unlike its previous top-down shooter format, the sequel is a third-person shooter game.

Five-time Emmy award winner Genndy Tartakovsky developed and directed the animated television series, Star Wars: Clone Wars, for Cartoon Network. Lucasfilm was involved in the production of this Star Wars project, set in between the events of the prequel trilogy films, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith. The cartoon series explored the Clone Wars for the first time and involved some amazing animated action sequences involving the Jedis and the Clone Troopers.

One such action sequence from the animated series influenced an animator to recreate the scene involving Helldivers. One X user, @BNBaku2, who calls himself the “Angry Australian Animator Guy,” put some effort into recreating the scene with Helldivers and Automatons from the Helldivers 2 video game. The animator revealed that he created all the animated models using Goo-engine, a custom-built version of Blender for animation purposes.

The idea came to the user after seeing an X meme that compared Helldivers 2 gameplay with a scene from Star Wars: Clone Wars. Fans were very impressed by the animated video and shared their positive comments about the work. One fan shared that the video almost convinced them that it was an animated remake of Helldivers 2. Another fan praised the animator for his animation style, which stood close to Tartakovsky’s work.

Several fans thought of the Clone Wars sequences while playing the new game, and they were happy to see their thoughts translated into visual format. When @CultureCrave reposted the video side-by-side with the Clone Wars sequence, one fan shared that it took way too long to figure out which was the Helldivers one.

While the prequel trilogy of Star Wars was a divisive set of movies, fans unanimously loved Genndy Tartakovsky’s version of Star Wars: Clone Wars. The fan love for the series is surely reflected in this animated video of Helldivers 2, which is already getting a positive response from the gaming community. Years after its debut on Cartoon Network, the series finally began streaming on Disney+ in 2021.

Helldivers 2 received favorable reviews from critics, as revealed by the review aggregator website Metacritic. The game received a good 82/100 for both PC and PS5 versions. The sequel to the 2015 game generated a buzz among gamers, and there was a huge influx of players when the game was released on February 8, 2024.

The servers were unable to accommodate such a massive number of players at once, and it led to several issues. In the first two weeks, several players were unable to log in and play the game. Gamers also complained about crashes while playing the game. However, Arrowhead quickly responded to the issues and sorted out several issues during the game’s third week. According to IGN, the number of concurrent users increased to a whopping 700,000 in its third week.

According to another IGN report, the game sold over 3 million copies as of March 3, 2024.
