Webb buffeted in Women’s Open at windy St Andrews

Golfing great Karrie Webb has endured a brutal start in her return to the Women’s British Open at St Andrews as fellow Australians and many others also struggled in gusty conditions.

Hall of Famer Webb is only an occasional tournament player these days but couldn’t resist the opportunity to play an event at the Old Course one more time, exempt as a past winner.

However, the 49-year-old three-time Open champion battled from the outset in windy as she posted an opening 10-over 82 including two double bogeys and seven bogeys.

It left the seven-time major champion 14 shots behind early clubhouse leader Ruoning Yin of China, who shot a four-under 68 to be one stroke clear of South Korea’s Jenny Shin (69).

Webb’s countrywomen were also finding it tough going, as did many others in the major championship field.

Min Jee Lee shot a 78, including two double bogeys and four bogeys, while fellow major winner Hannah Green had a 77.

Gabriela Ruffels was eight over through 14 holes, Hira Naveed was five over through 11, Grace Kim was four over through 14 and Steph Kyriacou was three over through three holes.
