What Went Wrong With Dragon’s Dogma 2 Storytelling?

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is one of the most popular as well as controversial titles of 2024. This action role-playing title was developed and published by Capcom. Just two months after its release, the game sold more than 3 million units.

In this game, the player fills in the shoe of Arisen, who is a hero marked by a dragon whom they must defeat. Despite the widespread popularity of the game, the game has been criticized heavily as well, for many viable reasons.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 Was facing FPS Issues Because of the NPC’s Thoughts

One of the most criticized aspects of Dragon’s Dogma 2 is its performance. Despite several patch updates after its release, developers failed to improve the constant framerate even on highly compatible rigs.

Finally, a new patch for the game was dropped recently in the previous week, which added an option to prioritize either graphics or performance. When Capcom was asked about the reason for the game’s oft-lamented framerate issues, the developing company gave a weird reply.

In a Famitsu interview (via Google Translate), Capcom stated that CPU power in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is allocated to process the “thoughts” of each NPC and how they interact with physics calculations. The company has been “reviewing the processing of NPC thoughts and making fine adjustments such as the execution order of each process in updates since the release.”

That is why, after the recent update, the game is now able to run on “approximately 50 to 60 FPS” on PS5 and Xbox Series X. Steam too had a similar setting to reduce processing load.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 NPC Complexity Has Always Affected its Storyline

Even though some may have found the framerate problems annoying, Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s NPC intricacy is a really important aspect of the series. Every NPC has to keep up with regular activities, timetables, and even relationships with other NPCs.

Despite their language making them look like complete idiots, the Pawns are particularly complex. That is why the game used to face huge backlash from players.

They are always adapting to the actions of players, even picking up new strategies while fighting, offering loud counsel, guiding players to treasure, and, well, killing them! Given how active every character in the world is at any given time, it’s no surprise that some of the game’s most congested regions become a touch frantic.
