Whether Elden Ring 2 or Another Project, Hidetaka Miyazaki Worries FromSoft May Bite Off More Than It Could Manage

Everyone wants an Elden Ring 2, but does Hidetaka Miyazaki think it can be done again?

The recent success of the base game and its highly anticipated DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, has been unimaginably large. It’s arguably the studio’s biggest game to date, and the calls for making a sequel haven’t gone unnoticed. However, Miyazaki’s words from a previous interview hint that it might not be possible for his team to create a game of this scale again.

Elden Ring Pushed the Limit for Miyazaki and Co.

In an interview from June 2024, FromSoftware President Miyazaki spoke to The Guardian about the scale of the base game, how it pushed the company’s limits, and the possibility of other people taking over his work.

He spoke about how the game was a “turning point” for the team, and that you can see a clear difference between it and something like Armored Core VI.

Miyazaki briefly mentions his hopes to see other directors also lead projects in the company. As we’ve previously learned, he’s very hands-on with his projects and promotes openness within his team, encouraging input from other staff members.

It would certainly be interesting to see projects headlined by other individuals at the studio, seeing as how the work environment promotes creativity and ideation.

He talks about how Elden Ring is where the studio truly hit its limit:

We’ve tapped every resource and talent that we have access to … scaling it even bigger, I’d have my concerns.

For this reason, he thinks having multiple smaller projects in the works with younger talent directing them would be the most beneficial next step for the studio.

No doubt a sequel for this highly beloved game would rake in cash by the second, but Miyazaki’s interview answers hint that it might not even be possible to make another game of Elden Ring‘s scale, regardless if it’s a sequel or not.

That being said, he’s not opposed to exploring more of the Lands Between, so long as it’s in another format:

I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example. But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium.

He mentions that he’s open to the possibility if the company finds a very strong partner that it could trust to fully realize his creative vision.

Could this be a hint at something happening behind the scenes? We sure hope so.

The Lands Between and the Land of Shadow are so rich in history, and there are still a lot of plot points that could be explored and fully fleshed out.
