Wildfire grows to nearly 2K acres next to Utah-Colorado border

MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) – Crews from Mesa County are currently working to contain a wildfire near the Colorado-Utah border.

The fire initially started Monday after lightning caused the blaze just inside the Utah border north of Interstate 70. The wildfire has grown to 1,920 acres as of Tuesday, according to the Bureau of Land Management. Around 10% of the fire has been contained.

The blaze first grew quickly due to grass and sagebrush, threatening nearby structures, the BLM noted. But suppression efforts from engines and aviation prevented the fire’s growth.

The BLM said the area has seen high wind activity Tuesday which has brought an obstacle for crews. They are attacking the fire directly on the edges to secure and clean up the perimeter.

Agencies such as the Lower Valley Fire District, Mesa County Sheriff’s wildland team and the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit have responded to the fire.
