With Shadow of Erdtree, Elden Ring Can Further Humiliate Dark Souls by Breaking its Own Record

Elden Ring, which has already put the Dark Souls series to shame by becoming FromSoftware’s fastest-selling title, is expected to break more records with the highly anticipated downloadable content expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, which will be released in July 2024. Since the debut of Shadow of the Erdtree trailer on February 21, Elden Ring has witnessed a sharp rise in its active number of players as well.

In 10 years, Dark Souls 1, 2, and 3 have collectively sold more than 35 million units and Elden Ring has so far sold 23 million copies. However, with the new DLC, Elden Ring may sell more copies than the entire Dark Souls series in just 2 years. This would make Elden Ring FromSoftware’s best-selling and most profitable game of all time.

Elden Ring is getting a DLC called Shadow of the Erdtree

The first trailer for Elden Ring‘s expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, was dropped last month after being teased last February. FromSoftware revealed at the time,

“Rise, Tarnished, and let us walk a new path together – An upcoming expansion for Elden Ring, Shadow of the Erdtree, is currently in development. We hope you look forward to new adventures in the Lands Between.”

The announcement reminded many fans of the beloved game as Elden Ring had 45,866 players the day before, but hit 108,636 the weekend after the announcement. This alone explains how massive the DLC would be, but will it be enough for Elden Ring to break the record set by the Dark Souls series?

Can Elden Ring sell more units than the entire Dark Souls series?

Elden Ring became FromSoftware’s fastest-selling after beating Dark Souls III and even became the studio’s best-selling game, but there is a possibility that Elden Ring manages to beat the entire Dark Souls series in terms of sold units. As per Bandai Namco Entertainment (the game’s publisher), the Dark Souls series shipped roughly 35 million copies outside of Japan between September 2011 and March 2023.

As per Statista, Elden Ring has managed to sell roughly 23 million copies in just 2 years, so, there is a chance that Elden Ring manages to sell more units than the Dark Souls series thanks to the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. Elden Ring is among the most awarded games in history with 324 Game of the Year awards.

Elden Ring is available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is coming to these platforms on 21st June 2024.
