Woman on ventilator after being punched by Minneapolis man

A woman repeatedly punched in the head by a drunk Minneapolis man inside his apartment Tuesday may not survive, according to a charge filed Wednesday.

“As of the writing of this complaint, she is unable to breathe on her own, she remains on a ventilator, and her prognosis remains poor,” the criminal complaint reads, with prosecutors indicating additional charges are likely if the woman does not survive.

Calvin Doise Little, 35, is currently charged with one count of 1st-degree assault in connection with the incident, which happened early Tuesday morning inside an apartment on the 400 block of West Lake Street in the city’s Lyn-Lake area.

According to the charge, officers responded to a report of an assault around 1:10 a.m. and found the victim, bleeding heavily from her mouth with near-death agonal breathing, laying near the doorway to the apartment unit.

Officers found Little asleep on the bed, covered in blood with what appeared to be dried blood stains on his hands.

According to the charge, Little’s girlfriend said she’d gone to the apartment with her friend after Little had been drinking inside the apartment all day.

Little’s girlfriend told investigators Little and her friend got into an argument, which Little escalating by punching the woman.

The victim then grabbed a kitchen knife to defend herself, which Little allegedly took away before repeatedly punching the woman in the head.

Little’s girlfriend said Little also threw at least one punch at her, causing her to flee the apartment with her two children.

Investigators spoke with another witness who said she awoke to the sounds of screaming and kids running in the hallway and opened her door to find Little, “extremely angry” and appearing to be drunk, threatening to attack her, the charge states.

The woman said she noticed the woman lying in the doorway as Little attempted to force his way inside her apartment.

When officers awoke Little and arrested him, he was “very confrontational and aggressive” and had extremely bloodshot and red eyes and smelled strongly of alcohol, according to the charge.

“[Little] was extremely agitated, angry, and non-complaint at the scene, the hospital, and at the jail,” the complaint details.

In an interview with investigators, Little said he was drunk at the time of his arrest and doesn’t remember anything that happened.

“The only information that he could provide was that he was drinking that day, and he was upset with his girlfriend,” the charge reads.
