Woman’s body found in vehicle at Empire Mall on Monday had several stab wounds, police say
A Sioux Falls man is in custody after a woman was found dead in a car in the Empire Mall parking lot Monday evening, Sioux Falls Police Department Lt. Aaron Nyberg said in Tuesday’s police briefing for media.
Police responded to a call for service just before 7 p.m. at the mall, 5000 W. Empire Place Mall, after a man contacted law enforcement to report that 24-year-old Tyson Andrew Christians allegedly told him he killed his girlfriend, Nyberg said.
Officers found the body of 23-year-old Emily Isabella Eirinberg in the back of a vehicle in the mall parking lot, Nyberg said. The woman had “several stab wounds,” he said.
Christians was arrested inside the mall “without incident,” Nyberg said.
Investigators “don’t necessarily think” Eirinberg was killed at the mall but have yet to determine where she died, Nyberg said.
Christians currently has seven pending criminal cases in Minnehaha County, according to court documents, involving failure to appear, driving under the influence, possession and careless driving charges.
The 24-year-old has been previously convicted of domestic abuse, obstruction, possession of alcohol by a minor, possession of marijuana, driving under the influence and witness tampering charges, according to court documents.
Many of those convictions stem from a July 2020 arrest, in which Christians “got in a fight, stole his girlfriend’s car, body slammed her to the ground and then took off, only to get in two crashes,” according to previous reporting from the Argus Leader.
Christians is being held in the Minnehaha County Jail on aggravated assault charges, according to the jail’s inmate listing. The investigation into Eirinberg’s death is ongoing, Nyberg said.
