Wukong Taking a Page Out of Elden Ring’s Book For Its DLC Brings Joy to Its Fans
Black Myth: Wukong has been released worldwide for the PlayStation 5 and PC platforms and the gaming community made short work of the single-player story mode. Game Science spent the last few years getting this project up and running and those years of sacrifice and hard work are all worth it. Players were blown away by the work accomplished and expect this quality for future projects, whether for a story expansion or a sequel.
The success of the base game gave the developers the confidence and motivation to expand the franchise. However; the gaming community implores the team to take all the time they need and release new content whenever they feel confident and reap the benefits of a polished expansion.
The Game Developers of Black Myth: Wukong Are Taking a Page Out of Fromsoftware’s Book
The developers of Game Science struck gold with Black Myth: Wukong after achieving an impressive milestone of selling 18 million copies in the first two weeks. The gaming community is already invested in what the studio has worked on and the team is doing something right. The campaign was lengthy and the intense combat difficulty greatly factors into how fast a player can beat the story; however, the gaming community relished every second.
Story expansions are a great way to flesh out the lore and provide new content. Game Science could be on to something great if the studio avoids rushing out new content and bides their time similarly to how FromSoftware did for the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion which was universally praised and rivaled the greatness of the base game. Time is the greatest and most valuable resource for game development which shouldn’t be taken for granted.
Recent reports suggest that the developers are working on a new story expansion for Black Myth: Wukong, and it could feature other deities taking center stage. Chinese mythology is vast and has enough material to work with that could be adapted into a video game. The story of Sun Wukong was a great first attempt to expose the gaming community to this genre similar to how Santa Monica Studio did it for the Greek and Norse mythologies in the God of War franchise.
FromSoftware took a similar approach while working on the massive Elden Ring DLC. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki admitted he is not very good at video games, let alone a harrowing Soulslike experience of his own making that forced him to rely on his knowledge about the project to get him through certain areas and obstacles in the base game to better prepare for the story expansion. The developers did not rush out to maintain the momentum the base game started which served them well after Shadow of the Erdtree was universally praised by the critics society and the gaming community alike.
FromSoftware Did Not Let the Success of Elden Ring Inflate Their Ego while working on Shadow of the Erdtree
Game development is not for the faint of heart; fortunately, the talented game developers of FromSoftware have years of experience under their belt and used everything they have learned from previous Soulslike projects and funneled it towards the development of Elden Ring and the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion.
The game developers of Game Science drew inspiration from the success of the Soulslike genre. While Black Myth: Wukong is not a Soulslike title, it shares striking resemblances in intense combat and gameplay mechanics. Perhaps the developers will borrow more notes on how to create a worthy expansion that will live up to the hype and expectations of the base game.
Greatness requires time which is the best and most expensive investment a gaming studio can make. Not everything can be rushed to meet a projected release window and the gaming community will likely tear it apart, especially if it doesn’t meet expectations. There is no telling where the developers will take the Black Myth: Wukong franchise next but it is no secret that fans want that level of care and quality for whatever is coming next.
FromSoftware and Game Science found success by taking all the time the developers need to craft something special. Waiting without news or updates from the game developers can be painful but receiving a rushed half-baked product that is nowhere near the standard established by the base game will be twice as painful.
