Xbox Avatar feature is closing down

Microsoft recently updated its Xbox Avatar Editor app FAQ, which states that it will be shutting down the app early next year and, therefore, basically all Xbox Avatar functionality.

Starting January 9, 2025, the Xbox Avatar Editor app will be discontinued. So, players won’t be able to use the app on their Xbox consoles or PCs anymore, which includes access to their Xbox Avatars and any items they’ve bought for them.

Notably, this change won’t impact Xbox Original Avatars, as they’ll still function in the supported Xbox 360 games, and you can continue to edit them within the Xbox Original Avatars app on Xbox consoles and Windows devices.

Why will the Xbox Avatar Editor app no longer be available?

Microsoft states that it is dedicated to delivering great experiences for players, including a variety of options to personalize their gaming experience with Xbox. Due to low engagement and our shift in focus towards delivering other player experiences, the Xbox Avatar Editor app will no longer be available starting on January 9, 2025

However, if you are one of the few who did make any purchase note that all purchases of Xbox Avatars made between November 1, 2023, and January 9, 2025, will be refunded to your valid payment method once the Xbox Avatar Editor app is no longer accessible.

“Players can continue to customize their gaming experience with dynamic backgrounds and profile colors on Xbox consoles, as well as with Xbox Original Avatars, profile themes, and gamer pictures on both Xbox consoles and PCs,” said Microsoft. You still have the option to use the avatar as your gamer picture, but you won’t be able to change its appearance or access it elsewhere.

To make any alterations to your gamer picture, you’ll need to do so through the Xbox Original Avatars app.
