Alan True obituary: Pianist could mine magic out of music

Musicians like to be called versatile, and Alan True lived up to his surname. On his 80th birthday he played organ in a cathedral, in his socks because his shoes were too big for the pedals.

This was in Geraldton’s St Francis Xavier Cathedral five years ago. The chance to press keys and fill the air with hymns fell into his lap. He and his wife, Jill, had been visiting the cathedral when they happened upon a concert given for a tour group. The Trues joined the audience. They knew they were definitely welcome when the organist played Happy Birthday and the audience sang. There was more to adorn the occasion. Alan was invited to play.
