Champion Naoya Inoue pummels Doheny into submission

Japanese boxing superstar Naoya Inoue remains the undisputed world super-bantamweight champion after stopping Irish challenger TJ Doheny in the seventh round of their title fight in Tokyo.

The Australian-based Doheny dropped to his knee before quitting because of an apparent back injury.

Doheny complained of a “twinge” after walking back to his corner gingerly on Tuesday.

Before then, he was getting pummelled by Inoue, who celebrated his technical knockout for a 28th successive win in muted fashion in Tokyo.

This was the 31-year-old Inoue’s 23rd world title fight since his first in 2014.

He is a four-division world champion – light-flyweight, super-flyweight, bantamweight – where he is the undisputed champion – and now the super-bantamweight.

Next in line for Inoue, considered by many as the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet, could be Australian Sam Goodman.

The New South Welshman is the mandatory challenger for two of the world title belts held by Inoue.
