Cop claims self-defence in alleged hospital assault

A police officer will argue he was acting in self-defence over an alleged assault at a Sydney hospital that was caught on camera.

Senior Constable Steven John Hyde was charged with common assault following an incident at Blacktown, in the city’s west, on November 9, 2023.

A not-guilty plea was entered on the 39-year-old’s behalf during a brief hearing in Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday.

The court was told the entire incident was caught on CCTV and Hyde would claim he was acting in self-defence.

The incident happened when the senior constable was on duty, police said.

A date was set for a one-day hearing in May, when prosecutors were expected to call five witnesses.

NSW Police on Tuesday said Hyde’s employment status remained under review following the charge.

The matter will return to court on May 19.
