Usually, sequels take place years or decades after their predecessors, but it looks like Gearbox Software wanted to break away from the norm. Borderlands 4 will continue the narrative of the previous title just seconds after the last title.

This is not only a bold move but also showcases that the studio is willing to take a risk to create a seamless transition between the games. This direct connection promises players an immersive experience and provides them with an aftermath of the epic showdown at the end of the third installment.

During PAX West 2024, there were various concepts of arts and design were showcased which showed the varied environments influenced by the Sci-Fi tech. Not only these areas will be explorable but players will have various new things to loot as well. Not many details were shared but Art Director Adam May expressed that the Borderlands universe is so vast and unique that the team can get inspiration from various aspects.

May share some thought processes behind the concepts of arts and how they came to be. He said this during PAX West:

It is a post-apocalyptic world but in the distant future, so it’s like high-tech but lo-fi. It creates all kinds of interesting opportunities with what we can do with tech, our weapons, our characters, and world in general.

After seeing the concepts and designs of the upcoming new areas, the whole community is looking forward to the game. If these are small indications about the game, it looks like the full game will be able to deliver an experience that is not only rich in detail but also pushes the creative boundaries of the franchise.

Just like Adam May said, “The Borderlands universe is super interesting and there is so much to get to play with“, players are also looking forward to experiencing that diverse gameplay.

As expected, Gearbox Software will be under a lot of pressure as it has to not only connect all the dots with the previous title but also create various environments and mechanics to fulfill the player’s high expectations. It is known that the studio is committed to creating an immersive world with an innovative storyline.

In the end, as players are waiting for details about the upcoming sequel, they are now speculating and researching every concept of art thoroughly to learn every detail possible.
