Hidetaka Miyazaki Knows Why Many Fans Hate Bosses Like Elden Ring’s Godrick

FromSoftware’s president, Hidetaka Miyazaki, is well-known for popularizing the Soulslike genre among a wider audience with games like Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring. While these video games are widely considered as some of the best games of all time, fans hate one thing about it: predictable boss fights. This was a major problem in the Dark Souls series and while DS3 fixed this problem to some extent, it returned in Elden Ring.

While working on Dark Souls 3, Miyazaki was aware of this problem and decided to fix this issue. However, some fans complained that Elden Ring suffered from the same problem. Soulslike games are well-known for their difficulty but fighting boring predictable bosses can ruin the overall gaming experience, especially for fans who are looking for a challenge.

While talking about 2016’s Dark Souls 3, FromSoftware’s president, Hidetaka Miyazaki, acknowledged the fan complaints regarding predictable boss battles in his Soulslike games. Miyazaki explained that he planned to fix this issue in DS3,

“In regard to gameplay elements for bosses, we’ll bring the heat-up system [to Dark Souls 3] – I’m aware there are some boss designs that get a bad reputation from some of the fans out there – I’m aware of that.”

Some boss fights were indeed very challenging and unique in DS3 like The Dancer of the Frigid Valley boss fight, however, the problem returned in 2022’s Elden Ring.

Elden Ring isn’t a bad game, in fact, it is labeled as one of the best games of all time but some boss fights just feel like a chore when it should be more entertaining and challenging for the player. Miyazaki admits that this problem exists in his Soulslike games, so hopefully, in the future, this will no longer be an issue.

With each Soulslike game, Miyazaki focuses on implementing fresh ideas. As for his Dark Souls series, he made it clear that “Dark Souls cannot exist without challenge.” Even though Miyazaki is done with the Dark Souls series, he once revealed that he would love to carry its elements to his future dark fantasy video games.

With Elden Ring‘s upcoming expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, fans can expect to see some new additions to the game. The challenge in Miyazaki’s video games is actually a part of the gaming experience as he believes it is a trial-and-error learning tool that motivates the players to fight harder. Miyazaki isn’t showing signs of stopping any time soon as he once told Famitsu that he is interested in creating games as big as Elden Ring.
