When you have a game the size of Starfield, with more than 1,000 planets to explore, you’ll find that encountering new content proves rather challenging. Seriously, where do you go? Do you fly straight to Va’ruun’kai and hope someone there explains the new questline? Here’s how to start Shattered Space in Starfield!

How to Start the Shattered Space Quest

To start the Shattered Space expansion, you must first complete One Small Step, the game’s introductory quest, which tasks you with completing the tutorial segment on Vectera and Kreet before arriving on Jemison to interact with Constellation for the first time. You don’t need to join Constellation, though. You can tell them you need time to think, then head back to the spaceport to fly off. From there, fly to any nearby system devoid of a mission or random encounter. Once there, you’ll receive a distress transmission from an unknown source, pointing you toward The Oracle space station.

All that said, it’s best to be around level 35 before you start Shattered Space. While it’s possible to venture to Va’ruun’kai at a lower level, you’ll find the content challenging!

Tips Before Starting Shattered Space

  • Do yourself a favor and reach the minimum level before jumping straight into the new content, no matter how enticing Va’ruun’kai appears in the screenshots and trailers!
  • Unlock a few powers by progressing through the game’s main storyline, as they’ll help you complete the storyline in Shattered Space, though they’re not a requirement.
  • Stock up on ammunition and health items beforehand, as it’s unclear precisely what type of economy Va’ruun’kai has after its disaster.
