Red Dead Redemption 2 Arthur Morgan VA Blames Rockstar for His Biggest Regret in the Game That the Studio Ignored
Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the most detailed open-world games in recent memory and a monumental success but it could have benefitted from the advice behind the man Arthur Morgan. The game developers of Rockstar Games refused to listen to Roger Clark’s advice despite his Irish heritage regarding the proper pronunciation of certain names; however, the studio ultimately decided to ignore his advice and looked the other way and thought no one would notice and no one would be the wiser.
The game developers extensively researched how wildlife would react, and the dynamic weather conditions. However, there is one aspect that bothered the man behind Arthur Morgan.
The Voice Actor of Arthur Morgan Has One Valid Criticism About Red Dead Redemption 2
The developers of Rockstar Games pride themselves on making each project bigger, better, and more detailed than the last as a metric for growth and self-improvement in the ever-evolving gaming industry. The recent Western project took the studio nearly a decade to perfect and the gaming community was upset to discover removed content that never saw the light of day.
Despite all their efforts to perfect the graphical side and the real-world physics, Roger Clark revealed he tried to correct the studio about certain pronunciations of Irish names like Colm O’Driscoll but declined to heed his advice. Clark, an Irish man himself, could not let it slide but had no power over the higher-ups and begrudgingly pronounced the name the way the studio wanted.
The only thing I regret is saying Colm O’ Driscoll incorrectly. Rockstar made me say it wrong , I told them it was wrong, they didn’t care. It’s pronounced ‘Colom’, it’s not Colm
Clark spent years working on the project and in those years, he embodied everything about Arthur Morgan. Clark revealed his specific way of walking somehow helped secure him the role and it proves Rockstar Games has a way to identify talent and without Clark’s stellar performance, Red Dead Redemption 2 could have been much more different.
Perhaps the developers failed to see the relevance of Clark’s advice and decided to disregard it and remind him to stick to the script. Sometimes an actor’s input reflects their innate knowledge about certain topics and their dedication to the craft to deliver an authentic representation of a certain ethnic group.
Rockstar Games Should Have Listened to Roger Clark’s Advice
The renowned voice actor was locked in as Arthur Morgan making him much more relatable and alive. Players recently discovered Arthur will sing during his journey riding on horseback which adds another layer of depth to the character.
Clark delivered a great performance that deserves to be honored and the actor received his due during The Game Awards of 2018 in which he won the award for Best Performance. Amidst the fierce competition, Clark’s Arthur Morgan reigned supreme and is a testament to his skill and influence over the gaming community.
Pronouncing certain names may not seem like a massive deal to Rockstar Games but Clark wanted to stay true to his Irish heritage. The agonizing pain the actor must have endured to repeat pronouncing a name he knows deep down is wrong and deliver it with finesse proves he has the acting chops to nail this role.
Rockstar Games struck gold with Red Dead Redemption 2 but it would not have been that successful if it weren’t for Clark and his dedicated colleagues. Hopefully, this will become the golden standard for voice acting and collaboration in future video games.
