Shipbuilder Austal shifts into profit after $57m US legal sting, eyes 2000-plus hiring spree

WA shipbuilder Austal turned a profit despite a $57 million sting in legal costs, and is now reading to hire more than 2000 people over the next three years to fill a big pipeline of defence work.

Earnings before interest and tax were $56.5 million thanks to gains made on the sale of land in the US, offsetting lawyer bills and a plea deal to settle a long-running fraud investigation into its flagship shipyard in the United States.
