These NY colleges are some of the best in U.S. See the rankings
Dozens of New York colleges, including the University of Rochester and the Rochester Institute of Technology, have been named some of the best in the country in two separate rankings released earlier this month.
The 2025 Wall Street Journal ranking of 500 schools “measures how well each college sets graduates up for financial success.” And Forbes recently released its annual list of America’s top colleges, ranking 500 schools to highlight which “offer the best educational, financial and career outcomes for all students.”
Here’s how New York schools fared in both lists.
Wall Street Journal’s rankings
The Wall Street Journal’s rankings, in collaboration with College Pulse and Statista, are based on student outcomes, learning environment and diversity.
With an overall score of 60.4, St. John Fisher University came in at 277, followed by the University of Rochester at 316 with an overall score of 56.9 and the Rochester Institute of Technology with 56.7 at 318. Nazareth College also made the Wall Street Journal’s list, squeezing in at 478 with a score of 35.5.

Forbes’ rankings
Forbes ranked their top schools based on return on investment, average student debt levels and outcomes for their graduates.
Rochester’s footprint was a bit more sparse on Forbes’ list as University of Rochester came in at 91 and the Rochester Institute of Technology followed a bit further down the list at 301.
