‘This was not a random act,’ several people found dead after Irondequoit fire, police investigating incident as homicide
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Several people were found dead inside a home in Irondequoit after crews were called there for a reported fire. The investigation began Saturday morning around 5:30 at a Knapp Avenue house.
Firefighters were met with flames once on scene and were quickly able to get it under control. Several people were found dead inside in the aftermath. It’s not yet clear how many people were found.
The deaths, police said, are being investigated as a homicide. The Medical Examiner is working to determine how they died. Their identities have yet to be released. A portion of Knapp Avenue was closed as police worked the scene. The road reopened around 9 p.m.
“We’re working in conjunction with the Monroe County Fire Bureau, and we also have New York State fire investigators – arson investigators here,” Chief of Police Scott Peters said Saturday afternoon.
Beyond the investigation, Chief Peters said there will be an increased police presence in the neighborhood to help residents feel at ease.
“[neighbors] know that the family that lives there has been wonderful people, very nice,” he said. “I hate to use the term that it’s an ‘isolated incident,’ but this was not a random act.”
