Wukong May Not Win the GOTY Award This Year

2024 has been an impressive year for gaming as we’ve seen several big hits. Titles like Helldivers 2, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, Black Myth: Wukong, and Astro Bot have all found love from gamers worldwide. But which one of them is Game of The Year?

According to a community vote online, none of them are. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is leading the fan votes for GOTY 2024. But is that set in stone or does the competition have more to offer? It’s almost time to find out.

Helldivers 2 Started the Race but So Many Other Games Have Come After It

The annual Game Awards have grown to become the Grammys or the Oscars of gaming. The voting system for these awards involves both media critics and public votes, with the former having a 90% influence on the final decision. This year’s competition has been one of the best we’ve seen in a while.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has quickly become the favorite to win GOTY. It currently leads the IGN fan votes in its community poll. Although fan votes only contribute to 10% of the final decision, the sheer popularity of Rebirth and its 90+ Metacritic score places it in the best spot for gold.

Starting off the competitors’ list, Helldivers 2 has been one of the surprise hits of 2024. Released earlier in the year, this co-op action game was a huge hit with a player count that peaked at half a million players. However, the odds are stacked against it in the GOTY race. Historically, multiplayer games have struggled to secure nominations, let alone win.

Similarly, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree came out this year and is one of the best, if not the best DLCs to ever come out. It introduced players to new bosses, lore, and stunning new locations and made it feel like 2022 all over again. While Elden Ring won GOTY in 2022, expansions and DLCs are often excluded from serious GOTY consideration.

What About Games That Came Out Later in the Year?

Then there’s Black Myth: Wukong, the biggest and fastest-selling game of the entire year. Developed by Game Science, the action-adventure game based on Journey to the West is a technical marvel.

Fans praise the game’s numerous boss battles and stunning visuals. However, its primarily Chinese fanbase and the political controversies surrounding its developer might limit its visibility in the global voting process.

Following Black Myth: Wukong is Astro Bot, Sony, and Team Asobi’s masterpiece of a game. With a 94 Metascore, it is the most critically successful game of the year. However, as a family-friendly platformer, it might not win the GOTY conversation.

It’s also important to consider that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has been out much longer than its competition. This gives it a significant advantage, as it has had more time to build a larger player base and get more votes in any poll.

Games like Astro Bot and Black Myth: Wukong haven’t even been out for a month. But just the fact that they’re even being considered for GOTY shows how good they are.
